will tina leave snl?

I thought this was going to happen - new baby, new TV show, new life without SNL? The celebration of Tina Fey's 145th episode/9 seasons at Saturday Night Live during the season finale's Weekend Update segment and her 'Thank You' t-shirt during the final credits were pretty big clues. Perhaps this will mean we'll see and hear more from The Lonely Island guys, Seth Meyers (he's a head-writer!), and my hometown girl Liz Cackowski.

2 hour season finales

Oh, do I miss the days of two-parters and To Be Continued's. I've saved up many of this season's finales to watch with my husband and unfortunately, they are all two hours episodes. Usually, I do enjoy watching back-to-back episodes of a show on Tivo, but there is something painful about the intentionally programmed two hour show. It's never ending. Two hours of one Desperate Housewives episode - too long. Two hours of 24 - too long. Even Grey's Anatomy, which was worthwhile television, and Alias, which was going off the air, were - too long. I think the problem is this - fast forwarding through commercials can make a 30 minute show take no time to watch. An hour long program can be enjoyed over a meal. But two hours! Even without commercials, it's a time committment. It's too much for one seating. If I watch an hour long episode, I then have the choice to commit to more, to another episode if I have the time and interest, but that's not so with a two hour show. Sure, I could stop watching in the middle of the program and then pick it back up again. That might make sense, but I don't want to do that.

a movie about the sport of paintball

Starring Rob Corddry from The Daily Show.

Banned for ten years from the sport he helped bring to the masses, paintball's first superstar, Bobby Dukes, returns to reclaim his title and erase the memory of his tainted past. As a teenager, with explosive style and charisma, Bobby led his team, the River Rats, to an unprecedented three consecutive victories at The Hudson Vallye Paintball Classic, the premier paintball tournament on the East Coast.

June 12th, 1993, The River Rats were competing for their fourth 'Classic' victory when disaster struck. During one of Bobby's signature daring moves, he was shot. Desperate to stay in the game, Bobby intentionally wiped the paint from his jersey, thus committing paintball's most heinous crime, 'Wiping.' An overzealous referee spotted the wipe and ejected Bobby from the tournament. The news spread like wildfire and the three-time champ, became the laughing stock of the paintball community. Disgraced and humiliated, Bobby disappeared.

Ten years later, an older and wiser Bobby returns determined to recapture the paintball glory of his youth. He enters the 2003 Classic, but finds no self-respecting paintball player will be caught dead on his team. On the verge of giving up hope, Bobby joins forces with the most unlikely of allies; the referee that caught him cheating. Now, the two improbable partners must recruit a team of paintball misfits and take back the Hudson Valley Paintball Classic.

prince plays american idol!

Way more exciting than the actual announcement of the winner was the surprise performance of Prince on American Idol tonight!
There were rumors earlier in the season that Idol producers tried to get him to guest star in an episode, but he only wanted to perform and not spend time with the contestants working on their songs. I guess they found a way to work around that issue.

I have three thoughts on the finale, without giving away the ending:

1) I think Ryan Seacrest should end the show Miss America-style. Should the American Idol be unable to fulfill his/her duties, the first runner-up will become the new American Idol. The first runner-up is _____. The new American Idol, Season Five is _____. To be followed by a coronation.

2) Randy commented on Tuesday night that one of the songs was not good, although the performer was good. The judges' comments and the contestant's song choice always have an impact on the audience's votes each week, whether it's in a positive or negative way, but what about that final song--the first single song? The last song the two finalists sing are written for them and intended to be their first singles should they win. So what if those songs, or in particular only one of those songs, really suck. It's not the performer's fault, but could it still make or break the competition? And is anything done intentionally in order to help one contestant over another?

3) Okay, just two things. I forgot the last one already. Prince played American Idol.

This is what they say about themselves:

Why RHRealityCheck.org?

Opponents of reproductive health and rights believe contraception promotes - not prevents - HIV, and that teenagers who sign virginity pledges don't have sex and are safe from STDs. We think they need to GET REAL!

RHRealityCheck.org tells it like it is with daily blogging keeping you informed about the latest in the media and the blog world about reproductive health. We have the facts to counter the fictions of the opposition. We provide background information on who they are and how they distort these issues. We try to make right their Reckless Rhetoric.

When contraception coverage was threatened by insurance reform - Marilyn Keefe from the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA) joined us to blog on RHRealityCheck.org, and with her, we broke the news of its defeat.

When the Vatican found themselves in a quandary over condoms, Frances Kissling from Catholics for a Free Choice blogged on RHRealityCheck.org, and we just released a podcast from them on our site.

When William Smith from SIECUS was bounced from a CDC panel and replaced with an "abstinence-only" promoter from the President's home state, he blogged on RHRealityCheck.org.

j.j abrams and lost:NY

I have a theory on J.J. Abrams. It's probably not true, but I have to wonder if most of his work is going to prove to be interrelated. Once he hires an actor, he hires them for life. Sure they play different characters in each work, but Abrams also favors evil twin storylines, so there's an easy explanation for this, aside from the fact that he likes to work with actors that have already proven themselves to him.

MI: III plays like a very expensive episode of Alias. Both use the same bomb devices and both believe anyone can disguise themselves as anyone else (aka: an evil clone, a bad twin, or Tom Cruise in a mask.) Which immediately brings to mind Lost. The twins in the boat in last year's finale, the Lost book, 'Bad Twin', which Sawyer read on the island and which was recently released in the real world, and in particular, Michael's strange behavior. Will we find out that Michael is not really Michael, but his Bad Twin? Will he be a clone or will Jack rip off his face mask in the finale? I'm trying to avoid reading finale spoilers, but I would be really impressed if Phillip Seymour Hoffman turned out to be head of the Others.

Also adding to the mystery is Abrams new drama, Lost: NY. Okay, it's called Six Degrees, but it's about six New Yorkers whose lives intersect, although they don't know it. Isn't Manhatten a big island? Weren't all of the Lost lives connected prior to getting on the airplane, although they don't realize it yet? Is this Abrams' way of doing a spinoff? Will we find that the two shows are related? Just how genious is J.J. Abrams?

primetime deaths

There used to be a time when primetime TV wouldn't dare kill off a main character. A salary dispute or problems on the set could get a character written off the show, but the audience knew about it far in advance and the character would simply go off to college or move away or something. Now, every show threatens to kill off, not just a bit player, but a main character.

This week, Kristin at EOnline takes a look at TV's Bloodiest Season. She also shares my theory on the sex-death relationship for women on TV. This really seems to be true of Lost. The only two sex scenes in the show were followed by the death of the female involved, within the same episode. Libby didn't hook up with Hurley (thank goodness), but she was about to go on their first date.

The exception to this rule is Sun. She's pregnant and she is on the island with her husband so obviously there is something going on between them. However, we haven't seen a love scene between the two. Maybe that won't be written into the show so Sun can live and have the baby.

This female sex-death relationship has been around a long time in literature and horror movies, but there is also a stereotype of women from Asia being seen as sex-less. Interesting.

grey's anatomy

So I was wrong, but did you see The View interview? There was really no good reason for it.

president santos

It was sad to see The West Wing come to an end last night. The show really picked backed up over the last two years and, I think, could have kept going strong. Saying that, the inauguration was a fitting end. Martin Sheen will always be our president.

Also fitting was NBC's official announcement today of Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme's new series "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip", starring West Wing alums Bradley Whitford, Timothy Busfield, and Matthew Perry. Appropriate timing since last night's West Wing finale was titled 'Tomorrow'. The show has buzz-will we see a whole new era of Sorkin/Schlamme domination?

And yes, that really was Aaron Sorkin sitting among the Bartlet's, Santos', and staff.

Nets drive pickups

7 year primetime TV contract

I have no idea if any of this is true, but I found it interesting.

The standard contract for an actor or actress when they are signed to do a TV primetime series is 7 years with the following clause:

1. if the show does well, the actors/actresses/producers have the option to renew the show after 7 years on a year by year basis provided that the parties can agree on a fee.

There are shows that went well past 7 years like E.R., Will and Grace, Seinfeld and West Wing.

2. if the show doesn't do well, the network have the right to cancel the show but if at anytime they decide to revive the show, the actors/actresses are still contractually obligated to return to the show.

Such was in the case of the famous NBC network bungling of Pierce Brosnan's Remington Steele contract in 1986 which costed Brosnan his role as James Bond in "The Living Daylights".

3. Season 1 is usually debuted as a Mid-Season replacement during the slow time of Spring or Summer and only lasts up to 12 episodes

Season 2 and on are usually 22 episodes long (for 45 mins shows - 1 hour with commercials) and 18 to 20 episodes (23 mins show - 30 min with commercials)

4. during the first 3 years of the 7 year run of the show, the actors/actresses cannot renegotiate their salary: which usually starts at an average of $20,000 per episode and if the show does really well, the salaries can skyrocket:

Example: The "Friends" cast started at $22,000 per episode during the first 2 seasons. $60,000 to $200,000 per episode from Season 3 to Season 7. By the 8th, 9th and 10th year of "Friends", each of the 6 cast members were getting $400,000, $600,000 and then $1 million respectively per episode (multiplied by 20 episodes)

That's nothing compared to Seinfeld who received over $1.3 million per episode during the final year of the show!!

grey's anatomy season finale

Wow. So this season, Grey's Anatomy has been of more interest to me than Desperate Housewives. Saying that, Meredith Grey still drives me crazy and I'm so tired of the McDreamy-Meredith storyline. I can't believe that Izzie fell in love with her patient and tonight, as she poured her heart out in the most painful scene on television this year, I thought to myself, "Why do I like this show?" Where's the Nazi? Where's the fiery Sandra Oh? But then...in the last few minutes, Grey's Anatomy redeemed itself. Wow.

ABC is following up tonight's cliffhanger with a two hour season finale tomorrow night. I can't wait.

invasion and conviction won't see a second season

ABC and NBC, respectively, annouced that the bubbles shows won't be returning in the fall. I particularly think Invasion is a good show, but the plot would be difficult to sustain in the long-term. Conviction is decent, but with so many legal dramas out there, it had trouble standing out. Upfronts start tomorrow so there will be plenty more fall lineup news coming soon...

CNN polls Americans on GW vs. Clinton. Guess who fared the worst?

Poll: Clinton outperformed Bush

congress vs. myspace

I've been pleasantly surprised lately with some of the topics MTV Think News chooses to cover. Maybe a month ago there was an article on cell phone technology, specifically how far behind the U.S. is compared to other countries. This week, the headline is the Deleting Online Predators Act (DOPA), just introduced by Rep. Fitzpatrick (R-PA).

remember whit stillman?

It's been years since I've heard any mention of the writer/director/producer.

On Friday, he wrote in the Guardian why it’s been eight years since The Last Days of Disco and gave insight into his personal writing process.

the new and improved JUST BREAK

My husband started this blog over a year ago with the intent to post here frequently. Sixteen months later, this is post #2. Since I spend time each day emailing interesting items I find online to my husband, my sister, and my friends, it was suggested to me that I should take over the responsibilities of Just Break. It's a lot of pressure and there is quite a precedent already established here, but I think I'm up for the challenge.

I plan on discussing most of the topics originally laid out for the blog, with the addition of some other items. I anticipate many a post on politics, healthcare, and women's rights. This isn't meant as a detractor to anyone only interested in celebrity and entertainment gossip, but will hopefully add some depth to the blog. On the lighter side, I know a lot about weddings and wedding prep, enjoy other not-previously mentioned art forms like dance and theater, started running two months ago for the first time in my life, and love, love, love traveling and big events. Basically, there are no limits to Just Break.

It may be that only my husband, my sister, and my friends find this blog useful and amusing. If that's the case then at least I now have a place to consolidate all of my info without filling up their inboxes. At the same time--who knows?--maybe there is actually an audience out there for the new and improved JUST BREAK?
